A Community Advocate
It’s no secret that black people fall systemically behind their counterparts economically, educationally, and socially.
That’s why Higher Purpose Co.® is a consistent advocate for economic balance and policies that improve the quality of life for Black residents.
Digital Organizing. Community-Based Research. Policy Education.
We don’t play a guessing game when it comes to the needs of our communities. Through community-based research and grassroots efforts, Higher Purpose Co.® understands where our communities excel and where they are being left behind.
Resources that Support Black Ownership
We know that black businesses need mentorship and programming that fosters a sense of community. We also know that they need more tangible support, like funding and space to house their businesses, to maximize their success.
- Here are a few Higher Purpose Co.® success stories.
Dr. Mary Williams is a nurse practitioner who wanted to set up a health clinic in Clarksdale. The nearest hospital is a 45-minute drive away. Though Williams had raised seed money, no bank would give her a loan. Our nonprofit matched her monies with a CDFI. As a result, the Urgent & Primary Care Clinic of Clarksdale now exists. That facility has played a critical role in serving our community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trent Calvin Photography was incubated during our Delta Creative Business Challenge in 2018. Calvin has since opened a photography studio in downtown Clarksdale and secured contracts with schools and colleges. He has also provided photography for Higher Purpose Co.®.
Kenesha Lewis, a 30-year-old Black woman from Greenville, MS - which is 72 miles from Clarksdale - started a smoothie business out of her home. With assistance from our nonprofit, she was able to get a loan to finance a storefront in 2020. Now Lewis and her husband, Jason, operate Kay’s Kute Fruit.
